The SaaS Partner Programme Checklist for IT Resellers

Most IT resellers have been burned by at least one bad partner programme. You sign up, sit through a webinar, get handed a PDF, and then hear nothing for months. The commission structure turns out to be buried behind three tiers you’ll never reach, and the “dedicated support” is a shared inbox that takes four days to reply.

It doesn’t have to be that way. But you do need to know what to look for before you commit. Let’s take a closer look at the criteria that actually matter when you’re deciding which SaaS programmes deserve your time.

Start with the Commission Structure

This is where most resellers look first, and rightly so. But don’t just check the headline percentage. Ask how it’s calculated, when it kicks in, and whether it changes over time.

Some programmes use tiered models where you’ll earn a lower rate until you hit a certain number of deals or revenue milestones. That can work if you’re already moving volume, but for smaller resellers or those testing a new product category, it means you’re earning less during the period when you’re working hardest to prove the concept.

A flat-rate model with no tiers will pay you the same on your first deal as your fiftieth. That matters when you’re building a new revenue stream from scratch, because tiered programmes often pay the least during the months you’re working hardest.

Resellers who partner with Rocketseed, for instance, receive a flat 25% margin from day one with no tiers to climb and no annual sales quotas. That margin applies for the lifetime of each client contract, allowing recurring revenue to compound as new deals are added.

Also check whether you’re earning on a one-off basis or recurring. A programme that pays you once when the deal closes is fine for short-term cash, but recurring commission tied to ongoing subscriptions will compound over time and give you more predictable revenue.

How Onboarding Actually Works

A programme might promise full training and enablement, but what does that look like in practice? Some vendors hand you a login to a portal and call it onboarding. Others will run structured sessions that cover the product, the pitch, and common objections you’ll face in conversations with prospects.

Ask these questions before you sign:

  • How long does onboarding take from sign-up to your first client conversation?
  • Do you get a dedicated contact, or are you routed through general support?
  • Is there a live walkthrough of the product, or just recorded videos?
  • The best programmes will get you ready to sell within a week or two, not a quarter.

    Deal Registration and Lead Protection

If you’re actively selling, you need to know your pipeline is protected. Deal registration exists to make sure that when you bring a lead to the table, nobody else can swoop in and close it before you do.

Check whether the vendor has a formal deal registration process and how long the protection lasts. You’ll also want to know what happens if a prospect comes in through another channel after you’ve already registered them. Vague policies here are a red flag. If the vendor can’t clearly explain how disputes are handled, you’ll end up losing deals to their direct sales team or other partners.

    Co-marketing and Sales Support

Some vendors will leave you to sell entirely on your own. Others will actively help you close deals, and that difference matters more than most resellers realise.

Look for programmes that offer co-branded materials, joint webinars, or co-pilot demos where a product specialist joins your sales calls. This kind of support is especially valuable in the early days when you’re still learning the product’s finer details. A vendor that’s willing to join your demos is one that’s genuinely invested in your success.

Beyond demos, check whether the vendor provides case studies, email templates, and pitch decks you can customise. These save you hours of prep time and help you present the product professionally from the start.

    Your Evaluation Shouldn’t Take Months

Joining a SaaS partner programme is a business decision, but it shouldn’t require the same due diligence as a merger. The checklist above will help you filter out the weak programmes quickly, so you can focus your energy on the ones that are actually built for resellers to succeed.

The strongest programmes are transparent about their terms, fast to onboard, and generous with support. If a vendor ticks those boxes and the product fits your clients’ needs, you’ve found something worth committing to.
