How Social Media Algorithms Are Driving a New Generation of Horse Racing Fans to the Track

We’re living in strange times when you find out that an age-old sport like horse racing, with the majority of its fanbase being older, and a sport that’s heavily tied to traditions and history, is becoming a social media sensation.

There is no doubt that horse racing has become more popular in the eyes of younger generations, and this has been the plan of most horse racing organizations for years. After all, younger generations are in charge of making sure the sport survives in the future.

But we are more interested in how all of this happened. So, let’s take a look at social media algorithms and find out how they are driving a new generation of horse racing fans that the sport desperately needs.

  • Social Media Can Turn One Horse Into a Season-Long Story

The Algorithm Does Not Need You to Be a Racing Fan Yet

The main reason why horse racing is suddenly popular on social media is that algorithms changed. They are not creating a persona around you. Instead, they serve you just what you want to watch.

They’ve turned into recommendation-driven platforms based on your interactions, watch time, rewatches, etc. So, this means that you don’t need to follow a horse-racing account in order for a racing video to appear on your For You page.

TikTok’s current explanation of its For You system says recommendations are shaped by signals, including what people watch, finish, like, share, comment, and search for. So, in practice, you might be scrolling through TikTok and see one person grooming a horse, and you watch it till the end. Then you’ll see more horse-related content on your For You page.

Since horse racing is a big industry, it has plenty of things to show on social media. There can be ASMR videos of horse care, adrenaline-pumping racing, or even betting strategies explained. This means that people can enter the horse racing industry in many different ways. Horses Are Surprisingly Good for Social Media Content

Racing has another advantage that it has historically underused.

The athletes have personalities.

Traditional sports marketing usually tries to make viewers care about individual players. Horse racing can do the same thing with the horse itself while also introducing jockeys, trainers, owners, and grooms around it.

A racehorse stretching its neck toward a camera is understandable without any knowledge of racing.

That kind of content works particularly well with recommendation algorithms because it does not require context before it becomes interesting.

The Jockey Club's 2026 marketing discussion made exactly this point: modern sports audiences increasingly connect with characters, stories, and moments, not simply schedules and institutions. Its own research presentation argued that racing needs to make its horses and people recognizable personalities throughout the year.

Sandman Showed What Happens When a Creator Becomes Part of the Story

The clearest recent example is Griffin Johnson and Sandman.

America's Best Racing did something clever with its A Stake in Stardom program. Instead of paying an influencer to attend the Kentucky Derby, take three photographs and disappear forever, it made creators minority owners in real Thoroughbreds.

Johnson, who already had more than 14 million social media followers, became a small shareholder in Sandman through West Point Thoroughbreds. He followed the horse from its debut in 2024 through the 2025 Triple Crown trail.

According to The Jockey Club, Johnson's 51 Derby-related posts between March and May 2025 generated more than 212 million impressions and 35 million video views. His behind-the-scenes content with Sandman introduced the sport to an audience containing large numbers of people in their teens and twenties.

Some followers then encountered Johnson physically at Churchill Downs and Pimlico as that online story became a real racing experience. America's Best Racing described him as helping bring a new younger audience into the sport during Sandman's Preakness campaign.

The Best Viral Racing Content Often Barely Looks Like Marketing

Then came the 2026 Kentucky Derby, which is a complete sensation for social media, especially with all the celebrities attending this event.

The strange thing is that one of the defining pieces of content was not a polished commercial.

It was trainer Cherie DeVaux's emotional reaction to Golden Tempo winning the Kentucky Derby and making her the first female trainer to win the race.

You saw somebody realize that years of work had just produced the biggest victory of her career.

The algorithm could place that moment in front of almost anybody.

The Jockey Club said the wider 2026 campaign nearly doubled the previous year's record digital reach even without the same paid influencer amplification.

Social Media Can Turn One Horse Into a Season-Long Story

Algorithms also solve one of racing's traditional marketing problems.

The major events are too far apart.

The Kentucky Derby attracts enormous attention and then ends in roughly two minutes.

If the relationship with casual fans also ends there, the industry has gained a television viewer rather than created a fan.

Social feeds allow the story to continue.

Someone who discovers a horse during Derby week can later see its Preakness preparation, recovery, summer campaign, and Breeders' Cup journey without actively searching for each update. The recommendation system keeps resurfacing related content because the viewer has already shown interest.

So, social media algorithms are changing the entire horse racing industry, but for the better. They are bringing in more fans by allowing people to experience horse racing from many different angles. If this continues at the same pace, the future of the sport looks bright.
