Common cybersecurity gaps that can spell trouble for your business

Cybersecurity is something that all businesses need to take seriously, no matter what they do or how much profit they make, because everyone can become a target for the many malicious entities that populate the digital space these days, and whose techniques and skills are becoming ever more advanced.

Most companies are aware of how dangerous it is to navigate the complex digital landscape without robust security measures in place. Hearing about enterprises falling victim to scams and cyber-related crimes in the news has become a daily occurrence, so it’s pretty obvious we’re dealing with a growing phenomenon. This should motivate business owners and managers to constantly seek solutions that could give them an edge in the battle against hackers and cyber-attackers.

However, despite the dramatic headlines we read every day and the growing awareness that comes with it, many companies continue to treat cybersecurity rather superficially, like it’s just another task they need to cross off the list. In most cases, they limit themselves to the basics, such as using strong passwords, updating software, or using anti-virus programs, and ignore everything else. And herein lies the issue.

This tunnel vision approach to cybersecurity causes businesses to become oblivious to the cybersecurity gaps riddling their networks and systems, which attackers can use to sneak in unnoticed and cause extensive (and sometimes irreparable) damage. So, let’s see where these stealth vulnerabilities hide most often.

Insider threats

When it comes to potential cybersecurity risks and dangers, it’s common for companies to look outside the organization and focus their attention on external factors, such as hackers, malware, phishing, and other similar threats.

However, some of the most damaging events often start from the inside. The human factor is at fault for many of the cybersecurity-related issues that companies face, whether the harm is caused intentionally or not. Employees downloading unsafe files, exposing sensitive data without realizing it, or clicking on suspicious links without giving it a second thought, hackers gaining access to company accounts due to weak passwords or by stealing credentials are just some instances of insider threats that can wreak havoc on companies’ operations. These events could be significantly minimized if firms dedicated more time and attention to training their staff on cybersecurity matters and enforced more stringent access controls.

Uncovered endpoints

Cybersecurity systems are rarely as comprehensive as they should be, and they often fail to reach all endpoints, which include all tech equipment, tools, and servers, from laptops and smartphones to IoT components, that act as gateways to a company’s networks and databases.

With more people working remotely nowadays, IT infrastructures have become more distributed, extending far beyond office premises, and the number of unprotected endpoints has increased considerably. It’s hard to control the use of devices and implement uniform security measures across all departments when you’ve got staff working from many different locations.

This leaves the door open for cybercriminals to walk right in. Since smaller businesses usually have limited IT capabilities, covering all endpoints can be particularly challenging for them. But that’s what outsourcing is for. Partnering with IT professionals such as Cyberduo can help you stay on top of endpoint security, no matter how complex your IT architecture has become and how many components it includes.

A lack of IT expertise

The cybersecurity skills gap is an issue that affects businesses across the board, and it’s particularly noticeable in smaller enterprises, which are often preferred targets for cybercriminals because of their frail defences. In the absence of competent IT specialists, companies have to assign security-related tasks to other staff members, making them take on responsibilities that exceed their level of knowledge and skills.

Having overworked and underskilled employees handle jobs that are beyond their capabilities can only lead to subpar results, so it’s not surprising that these untrained individuals often make mistakes and fail to manage cybersecurity risks properly. Once again, outsourcing can provide an effective solution by allowing companies to access the IT expertise they need to keep their networks and assets safe.

Failure to keep up with tech advances

What many businesses still fail to understand, despite being quite a blatant reality, is that cybersecurity is not a one-and-done. Things move so fast in the digital world that some of the solutions that were considered cutting-edge a short while ago might not offer the same level of protection right now.

New tech products emerge all the time, creating both new opportunities and new security challenges. Hackers and scammers update their strategies constantly, so businesses that fail to keep up with this rapid evolution end up having more weak points that can be exploited by attackers.

Not having an incident response plan

With data breaches and phishing attacks happening left and right, you’d think that all businesses and organizations would have an incident response plan ready, in case something were to happen. However, some companies run on wishful thinking instead of concrete action, hoping that the measures they’ve implemented are strong enough to keep them safe from all potential risks.

So, when an incident does occur, they don’t know how to react to it, and the damages that could have been contained with prompt intervention escalate rapidly, turning into a much more severe event. It’s therefore wiser to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, even if those worst-case scenarios never come to pass.

In today’s hyper-digitalized business landscape, there’s a heavy price to pay for neglecting cybersecurity, and many companies learn this the hard way. Even when you think you’re doing everything right and have all your bases covered, there might still be hidden risks and threats that could evolve into something bigger. If you don’t address them right away, before you even know it, the cracks will turn into chasms, and you’ll be fighting a losing battle against cybercriminals.
